Krousar Thmey

who we are

Krousar Thmey

Cambodian foundation assisting deprived children

Established in 1991, Krousar Thmey (which means New Family) gives material, educational and social support to abandoned and orphaned children, street children and victims of trafficking. We also provide support through access to education to deaf and blind children. In all our work, our goal is to provide a moral upbringing and educational opportunities, whilst respecting and promoting cultural traditions and Khmer values.

what we do

We offer four temporary reception centres where former street children are prepared for reintegration into society. In our three long-term protection centres, we provide homes for more than 100 children under the age of 16 who are orphaned, abandoned or have fled their families as a result of abuse. Our 11 family-style homes look after over 100 very young or traumatised children. We also provide housing to at-risk single women with children as well as land and tools to enable them to support themselves and their families.

In our four schools for blind and deaf children where we provide a formal education, we created Khmer Braille and Khmer sign language and published schoolbooks from the national curriculum in these new languages. Training in massage, music, dance, computers and weaving has also been adapted for students with sight and hearing disabilities. In addition, we build schools in poor communities such as Poipet, supplement teachers’ salaries and buy educational materials for the schools.
